TUSCANY AND ROME PHOTO TOUR
OVERVIEW
Our 7 day Tuscany and Rome photo tour will let you experience the wonderment of Italian monuments, from the Renaissance palaces and grand Romanesque churches in the main centres through to the tiny traditional villages set in the tranquil rolling countryside with it’s breathtaking scenery.
David Still your tutor, will meet everyone in beautiful Pisa where we will capture the iconic Leaning Tower Of Pisa (the bell tower of the city’s cathedral) and its bustling narrow surrounding streets, before heading west to the coast to capture the shooting opportunities on the Ligurian Sea. We will then make our way east to Florence (known there as Firenze) the Jewel of Renaissance Italy. This is a city that never fails to impress.
While in Florence, a must see is the oldest of Florence’s six bridges, the Ponte Vecchio, this bridge was constructed in 1345 from stone pillars and wooden planks. She spans the Arno River at its narrowest point and has the intriguing feature of padlocks locked to various places which is thought to symbolise the idea of love and lovers: it’s believed that if you lock a padlock and then throw the key into the river, you will become eternally bonded with your lover.
We will be waking in Florence, so will benefit from the rich glow of the sunrise creating mirror-like reflections of the ancient city in the calm river. The photographic opportunities to shoot palazzos, arches and fountains are spectacular and numerous.
We will head south to the walled medieval hill town of Siena. Built over three hillsides, it is surrounded by well-preserved battlements and is home to the famous Cathedral Duomo, providing us with one of the greatest examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture. We’ll shoot the winding back streets and arches around the unique Piazza del Campo in the heart of the town, famous because of it’s fan-shaped segments leading from the Palazzo Pubblico (Civil Palace) and Torre del Mangia (Tower).
From here we’ll be heading further south into the countryside capturing the sun setting over the Tuscan hills before settling into our accommodation in San Quirico d’Orcia for 3 nights. In San Quirico d’Orcia we will be surrounded by stunning natural beauty, characterised by rolling Tuscan hills and cypress groves so we can capture perfect Italian landscapes. We are also within close proximity of many other features of the Area Naturale Val d’Orcia, a little known Italian thermal spring, a limestone river and rock formations around Pienza and Montalcino. Cortona, another medieval hillside village will provide us with steep narrow streets to shoot over it’s walls to embrace a stunning view of the Val d’Chiana.
Heading south on our way to Monte Argentario and Rome we will pass olive groves and experience the friendly Italian ‘vibe’ in tiny hillside villages before arriving in Orbetello. This is an area of immense ecological diversity run by the World Wildlife Fund. It appears to be an island but is actually connected to the main coastline by two strips of accumulated sand. This will make for some breathtaking photos for us. Shooting panaramic shots of the lagoon, then moving down to the sandy shore we will have options to capture the Tyrrhenian’s crystal clear blue waters and the rocky coast line at sunset and the before settling in for the night in this beautiful spot on the Tuscan coast.
After a sunrise shot we move into the Lazio region of Italy to venture along the Aurelia, a road that leads from the coast following the same route of the Old Roman Roads into Rome for lunch on the Tiber River. Rome, the capital of Italy and the hub of the ancient empire is where we will be greeted by an endless choice of locations to photograph, from the rambling cobbled alleyways, to the grand palaces and squares. We will then make our way to the Colosseum the largest ever amphitheatre built in the Roman Empire and explore the different angles possible to create unique photos, then a relaxing break over an espresso before enjoying the Medieval and Baroque empire under night light.
On our final day we will rise to visit the smallest state in the world and capture it’s architecture in the morning glow – The Vatican city referred to by the locals as Citta del Vaticano and St Peter’s Square known as Piazza San Pietro. We’ll gather once more over lunch before saying our group farewells and departing for a safe journey home.
Partners and family are welcome to come and enjoy the sights and atmosphere of Holland & Belgium while the photo tour group are out shooting, then rendezvous back at the hotel at night. Guided sightseeing tour of Holland & Belgium for partners if required. Non workshop participants “TOUR-IN-TANDEM” will be charged a lower fee.
