Thailand is officially the Kingdom Of Thailand and was formerly known as Siam. It is situated in the centre of the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia, bordering Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and the Andaman Sea. It is roughly the size of Texas, France or Spain and is the 50th largest country in the world.
Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand and is an absolute hive of activity with unique sights well worth seeing and capturing. Thai people use the phrase “Land Of The Free” to show their great pride in the fact that Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia never colonized by a European power.
There is a very pleasant respectful traditional Thai greeting is called “The Wai”. When two peopple meet, generally the younger of the two will press their hands together with their fingertips pointing upwards and similaniously bow their heads so they touch their hands. This normally is accompanied by a male saying “Sawasdee Khrap” and a female saying “Sawasdee Ka”. Once this has been quietly performed, the elder of the two people would then reply in the same way.
“Thai”is the official language of Thailand with more than 52% speaking it, but with Thailands well established tourism infrastructure and many large cosmopolitan cities, English is widely spoken and understood.
Religion within the Thailand is extremely important with 0.7% of Thais being Christians, 4.6% being Muslims and 94.6% being Buddhists. Throughout the land there are amazing examples of temples that the locals regularily attend and worship.
South of Bangkok is the province of Phuket located in the Andaman Sea known as the “Pearl Of The South”. Here is Thailands largest island with an abundance of sheer beauty that has managed to be on the whole preserved. The ever popular long white sandy beaches are numerous as well as the limestone cliffs, tropical vegetation and eco-friendly safaris plus many forested hills. To the east is an array of spectacular islands with individual personalities that can be explored easily by private charter cruisers and traditional Thai longtail boats to gain access to more secluded bays with shallow waterways that are not over populated by tourists.
Thailand is surely a destinations that is suitable for the majority of people, and offers an abudance of photographic opportunities to expolre in this sub-tropical country.
