NEW ZEALAND – SOUTH ISLAND PHOTO TOUR
Your 12 day South Island New Zealand photo tour will include the South Island’s most celebrated landscapes we will capture the breathtaking natural beauty within its incredibly diverse landscapes. We will venture from the main cities and off the typical “tourist track” to explore some deserted tranquil locations and wild terrain to capture your amazing photos.
We start our New Zealand South Island photo tour from Christchurch, the “Garden City” of New Zealand. We’ll head north driving through a mountain pass from the dry Canterbury Plains lying in the lea of the now protected Southern Alps that cut a spectacular rocky curtain against the sky making our way to the West Coast.
The centrepiece, surrounded by spectacular glaciers, is Aoraki Mount Cook – New Zealand’s highest peak. Heading inland to New Zealand’s highest peak, this centrepiece is surrounded by spectacular glaciers, Aoraki Mount Cook where will spend time catching the different atmospheres the light play at sunrise and sunset on the magnificent mountain. Nearby is Lake Pukaki where we will be captivated by her vivid turquoise coloured waters and beautiful Lake Benmore on our way to Omarama.
On the Otago Peninsula is Dunedin, a city full of Scottish influence. Originally settled by 344 Scots, who arrived in the area in March 1848, Dunedin (meaning Edinburgh in Gaelic) has kilt shops, New Zealand’s only whisky distillery, and a haggis-maker. Dunedin is now a university town, with plenty of energy reverberating around it’s harbour valley. Nearby on the East Coast is a beach with unusual spherical rock formations, called the Moeraki Boulders. We’ll take our cameras down onto the beach littered with these unique spherical rock formations that resemble clusters of giant marbles spilt and left lying along the sand, and seem to emanate a spirit of their own as we capture the warm morning light hitting their unusual stone plated exteriors.
For breathtaking vistas we will travel to the Fiords to explore the abundance of lakes fringed by lush green forests, glacial valleys and spectacular grand mountain views. As the sunrises over Mitre Peak we will photograph her glow before cruising along the fiord and out to the Tasman Sea capturing dramatic and awe-inspiring vistas while at Milford Sound.
Today will start with a sunrise shot in Glenorchy at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, then we will capture the remote countryside scenes, magnificient mountain ranges and fresh water streams near Mt Aspiring National Park, before returning to Queenstown for a free afternoon to explore the vibrant little town that is famous for being used as a location in Lord of the Rings films.
On the rain-lashed West Coast are the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. You will be intoxicated by the sheer grandeur of the snow-capped Southern Alps, it’s pinnacles scoring the skies. These alps have been listed as a World Heritage Area called Te Waipounamu (why pow nah moo) ‘The place of Greenstone’ and the Maori name for the South Island. They run nearly the entire length of the island from Fiordland to the Marlborough Sounds along the boundary of 2 tectonic plates that are part of the “Ring of Fire.” There are around 360 glaciers hidden in this massive collection of over 220 cloud piercing peaks that split the island in two. From here you can immerse yourselves in damp sub-tropical forests, capturing images of the moss-laden trees, rain soaked ferns and rocky mountain streams running with crisp melt-water.
Staying on the East Coast is a tiny town called Punakiki that lies on the edge of the Paparoa National Park. In this heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts though a number of vertical blowholes, we will be able to photograph the Pancake Rocks. They get their name because the limestone appears to be stakes of “pancakes” rising out of the ocean.
A morning journey will take us from one side of the island to the other, before arriving in St. Arnaud to capture nearby lakes. The Marlborough Sounds are one of the most beautiful and tranquil places in New Zealand, with intricate waterways and beautiful beaches surrounded by lush greenery provides for the perfect spot for some amazing photos.
Further south on the East Coast is a little coastal fishing village Kaikoura – translates to ‘meal of crayfish’ (‘kai’- food/meal, ‘koura’ – crayfish), where you will be able to photograph the striking sunrises over it’s unusual shaped craggy foreshores frequented by wild seals and sea birds. The Kaikoura Peninsula extends into the ocean south of the town resulting in water currents bringing an abundance of marine life, mainly Dusky dolphins and whales. Sperm Whale watching is perhaps the best and most developed in the world so we will be taking a boat journey out to see the acrobatic dolphins at play and up close in their natural environment.
Heading down the east coast we will arrive back in Christchurch where you will be departing our photo tour group and preparing for your journey home. There will be time for you to say your final farewells to the group.
