HOLLAND & BELGIUM PHOTO TOUR


Holland is situated in the west of the Netherlands on the North Sea at the mouths of the Rhine and the Meuse (Maas). There are numerous lakes and rivers with many inland canal and waterway system. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and the other main cities are Rotterdam and The Hague. The predominant language spoken in the Holland is Dutch.

Holland is famous to its cheeses. Centuries ago this labourious task was undertaken by women but today 98% of Dutch cheeses are produced by modern creameries which guaranteed efficiency and consistency. In 1883 the first creamery was established called `New Life’, south of Den Helder in North Holland. 106 creameries at the beginning of this century were accountable for almost half of the Dutch cheese production.

In the Netherlands there are five cheese markets operating. Woerden is a totally modern commercial cheese market where as Edam, Alkmaar, Hoorn, Gouda are all great reproductions of traditional merchant cheese markets that were common place in the Middle Ages.

Belgium is officially known as the Kingdom of Belgium and is a federal state in Western Europe. Belgium shares a border with Luxembourg, France, Germany and the Netherlands which were known as the Low Countries, and used to cover a larger area than the current Benelux group of states.

In Belgium there are two major considerations that they are renowned for and is almost part of their culture. That is the high standard of beer and chocolate that is produce in abundance.Chocolate consumption is estimated as being 16kg per head annually and beer consumption is estimated as being 100L per head annually.

Belgium produces over 450 different varieties with many Belgian beers having their own personalized glasses in which only that beer is served. These glasses are all individually designed with an emphasis on the shape of each glass beleiving it enhances the flavour of the beer.

Back in 1912, Jean Neuhaus founder of the iconic Neuhaus Chocolatier, created the praline that began the Belgium reputation for chocolate. This was due to the fact that they only used natural products and the chocolates were and continue to be today, all hand made and the varieties of praline produced is created by altering the amounts of cocoa and sugar in the chocolate mixtures.
